I Like it Kinky and Messy, How About You?

“Take the kinks out of your mind, not your hair!” -Marcus Garvey

Get your mind out of the gutter! I am talking about HAIR…the crown on your head. I love a kink, a curl, and a messy (non-straight) looking hairdo. It looks like happiness, it feels like freedom, and it screams joy. Don’t get me wrong I also like it straight too. I particularly like how versatile textured hair can be.

PSA: I LOVE MY HAIR!!!! In honor of my birthday today, I am grateful to be here another year, and I am blessed to have finally learned three big things I have wanted to know since I was a little girl: how to love yourself unconditionally, how to eat and live a healthy lifestyle, how to attract and maintain a healthy, happy relationship, and finally how to take care of and grow healthy, long, beautiful black hair!

Since I was a little girl I recognized I had wavy curls whenever I washed my hair. I would buy product after product in search of the perfect one for my hair. And I failed most of the time. I had no clue what I was doing. Although I loved natural hair…home girl was at a lost. So, I would always go back to relaxed and bone straight because it was easier to manage, and nobody else I knew was rocking their hair like that. It eventually got to a point where I stopped really caring. I simply did not know how to take care of it. I gave up and that’s when breakage, dryness, and hot messiness kicked in!

Finally, on this day I finally feel liberated. Finally free. Finally educated on how to take care of my hair! Most importantly I have learned that loving and caring for my natural hair requires PATIENCE because it brings with it many frustrations and plenty of joys like anything else in life. But, I do know that everywhere I look on the street, online, on TV, in pictures there are other sistah’s rocking their kinks and curls and they are stunning!

I feel as though what I had seen and loved about kinky, curly, messy, hair all along has now been appreciated, celebrated, and uplifted by thousands of women of color everywhere! Not only are we falling in love with our hair follicles, but others can see it as well. “NATURAL HAIR AND DON’T CARE” is my new slogan. Why should I hide behind a relaxer? It is nothing relaxing about your scalp burning in that salon or your hair never growing past your neck! Nope, that is actually depressing. That is actually a thing of the past ladies. THERE IS WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION OUT THERE FOR US NOT TO KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES, ESPECIALLY THE NATURAL HAIR THAT GROWS OUT OF OUR HEADS!

With the proper education, hair regimen, and products any gal could be on her way to healthy, beautiful, long hair. Really the first step I learned is learning to love the hair that you have. Then make it a priority to take care of it like you would your own body! Create a regimen with the right tools for success. Next is to find products that match your hair type and work well for you.

In honor of my birthday and the start of my new hair journey Regal Realness is offering a Giveaway sponsored by Rapunzel the Future Hair.

  1. I love my hair when it’s bone straight and easy to manage. I’m not into the natural hair journey per say but I do love maintaining my heathy natural hair! I’m not relaxing as often and I only do heat twice a month. With that alone I’ve seen it grow by leaps and bounds :))

  2. I love this!!

  3. I love my hair kinky and messy too! What I don’t like is the shrinkage from my WNG…LOL

  4. Happy Birthday!

  5. Loving my natural look & feel!!!

    Happy Birthday!!!

  6. Arianna Morton says:

I was actually natural for 18 years till i permed my hair…im now going back to natural because my ends kept breaking and I miss my long, lustrious and beautiful natural hair. My natural hair can be hard to manage sometimes but it is definitely work it

  7. I love Marcus Garvey’s quote. We need to learn how to love what we have! I’ve always hated my hair up until now because I thought that it was out of style. I thought my friends would hate it, I thought I wouldn’t know how to take care of it. The kinks were all in my mind. Once I took the weave out, the lies went with it. This was a great article, I enjoyed it.

  8. Tosha Bradley says:

Loving my kinks; the fullness, the texture, the healthiness. With I my kinks I just blend in I was born to stand out #teamkinky

  9. Brittany Butler says:

Happy Belated birthday Taria! Going natural is such a liberating experience. As black women, we can be so versatile with our hair. Most of the time I rock a puff, but I’ll straighten or wear a weave as well. Hope that you enjoy your journey.

  10. When I see straight hair now, I think it looks so boring. But it wasn’t like that before. I thought I had to keep my hair straight to be “professional”. Big hair with personality suits my hair much better!

  11. I wear my hair short w/perm & have been in debate to go natural. But can’t find a product line to convince me to do so………

    • Lisa…you can grow long, healthy beautiful hair with relaxers. The best products I have tried or heard about that work really well are: Shea Moisture products (sold in stores), Rapunzel Hair Line (www.rapunzelthefutureofhair.com), Nappturalistic Beauty ( http://www.nappybeautyproducts.com), and the one I am currently using is Ultra Black Hair Product Line (www.ultrablackhair.com). All of these products work well with relaxed or natural hair.

  12. Happy Belated Birthday.

Don’t consider your hair as messy because it is not. I do a lot of flat twists and flat twist outs and people really believe I have it done at the salon although I tell them I do it myself. Youtube.com and other websites like Curlynikki.com and Blackgirllonghair.com help give women a professional look that is polished and neat.

    • Thanks Jackie! I like calling my hair messy, but I do see where you are coming from. Thanks for sharing those websites. I love them because they are so informative.

  13. I’m LEARNING to love my natural hair!! Patience is KEY! The combing and detangling almost sends me running back every time!

  14. The giveaway is now closed. Winner will be announced tomorrow!
