5 Business Lessons from Beyoncé’s Lemonade

Bey took over the world last week when she dropped yet another surprise album, LEMONADE. Now, she is on tour, selling her visual album (for way more than the average price),  and everybody is talking about her even though she has been out of the limelight for the past 2 years.

Beyonce’, love her or hate her, is a badass business woman. Like Jay-Z once said, I’m not a business man…I’m a Business, MAN! Bey and her team are marketing and branding geniuses who will be laughing all the way to the bank for the remainder of this year (whether the cheating rumors are true or not!).

Here are five lessons you can learn from the Queen Bey:

1. Have a strategy for everything   
Bey is brilliant in business because she understands that you must be strategic as an entrepreneur. She didn’t wake up Friday and drop Lemonade on Saturday. No, with the depth of her album + the tour…she was planning this for a long time and she strategically set up everything to flow (ie. sales funnel) so that her fans were excited and drawn in.

For example, she dropped “Formation”, then during the Super bowl she performed and announced her tour….2 months later she drops her full album then her tour starts the next week.

Strategically she set up a linear flow to LAUNCH her product or service to the world in a creative way. This is called a “sales funnel.” If you don’t know what it is…then you better ask somebody…this is how you become wildly successful in business.

2.  Use your pain to profit
People buy because you hit a pain point for them. The more emotional something is…the more you can persuade someone to be interested in what you have to offer. Bey did this with the “cheating” narrative that she focused on in her visual album. Whether she was cheated on or not, doesn’t matter. What matters is that a good number of women have been at some point in their life…so many women will be able to relate to her album…therefore, they will be interested in Bey’s music.

3. Be unapologetic about who you are
As a business woman, your brand has to 150% represent and reflect you as a person. This is what makes you unique and different from the next person who does the same thing as you. Bey was unapologetic, especially about her “blackness” as a woman. She fearlessly incorporated her culture, roots, natural hair, and personal interest. That is who she is. This is what separates her from Katy Perry or another pop singer like Rhianna. The more clear you are about who you are and the more you own it, the more you will stand out.

4. Be relevant and real

Everybody and their mama is talking about, blogging about, or even creating products and services around #Lemonade. Simply because Beyoncé and her album are relevant right now. How are you using what is going on in the world, especially the media to connect with your audience? In addition, people have even started making book lists (#lemonadesyllabus) based on books by black women that remind them of #Lemonade’s visual imagery.

5. Share stories that people can relate to
Facts tell, stories sell….storytelling is the single greatest way to build a memorable brand and business. Beyoncé crafted a familiar narrative and uses it to captivate her audience. Most albums are a collection of songs…instead she chose to connect them all together. The life lessons and stories that her work evokes…gets to people’s emotions and gets into people’s pain which draws people in. Lemonade…as is reflected in the visual album comes from Jay-Z’s grandma’s 90th Birthday Speech, where she said, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” This lesson we will never forget because of Bey.
